Here's something new: Martindale-Hubbell will start publishing a new magazine called Counsel To Counsel Connections in August.  The magazine, created with the help of Leigh Dance of ELD International, Corporate Legal Times and Greenfield/Belser, will focus on law firm leaders and their industry experience, and assist leading law firms with their client development efforts.

The first issue will be 24 pages, full color, and will come out in August with a circulation of 40,000.  It will enable law firms to present a wide range of information on their expertise and capabilities to corporate counsel.  Sections will reference a link to their law firm's presence on martindale.com -- a URL for an article that ties to the feature, a URL to the industry/practice group profile, etc.

Features Content will include:

  • Best Practices : Mix of in-house counsel and lawyers providing best practices
  • Brief Advice:  M - H asks the same question to a range of law firms, a question whose response is of interest to in-house counsel.  Answer is limited to 3 sentences
  • Profiles in Partnership: Brief profiles about successful law firm/client partnerships, reading somewhat like a "Dewar's profile" and with quotes from the law firm or client.
  • Hot Topics: By industry sector --  each issue focuses on what should be the "horizon issues" for in-house counsel in that particular industry sector, e.g. life sciences, energy and utilities, consumer goods, financial services, etc.
  • Research: Presentation of research findings with comments/analysis by industry thought leaders.  Communication about upcoming research.
  • Counselor Skill Building:  Brief training capsules -- ideas for how in-house counsel can train their law departments on certain topics, such as reading a P&L;  understanding the merchant bankers' role;  preparing a litigation budget;  understanding financial disclosure rules;  approaching a joint venture in an emerging market;  performance appraisals for in-house lawyers, etc.  These will be written by in-house counsel or based on interviews with in-house counsel about how one learns how to do these things -- short and to the point -- ways to learn, questions to ask, learning resources, key points you need to know.
  • Counselor Skill Building Events: This column will have a listing of titles of various in-house training workshops and seminars provided by law firms.
  • Insight:  Practice and industry group profiles -- photos and summaries of the group profiles captured for the martindale.com Group Profile sections.
  • Faces and Places:  photos of in-house counsel and large law firms' lawyers connecting at M - H and other conference events.
