Jones Day is billing itself as the first law firm to make its web site available in Chinese. In fact if you visit http://www1.jonesday.com/, the site says that beginning this month the site is available in *seven* languages. The firm has an office in Shanghai and just opened a second in Beijing. There's a pull-down menu on the home page which allows you to pick a language and presto, the site is converted into German, Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese Chinese.
When the Financial Times learned of the claim, a writer quipped, "Observer is intrigued by just how one translates "herewith," "writ of estoppel," "habeas corpus" and other such legalese into Chinese characters. At least "billable hours" is easy."
However, Jones Day is actually late in putting up a Chinese site. Baker & Daniels based in Indiana put up a Chinese site four years ago; it's at http://bakerdanielscn.inherent.com/. California-based Morrison & Forrester has also had a Chinese-language site online for some time now, so JD is definitely not the first. Click here to see the MoFo Chinese site.

I'm attending the international confernece of the PM Forum in London on Wednesday, September 10. It's a fascinating organization of 4,500 marketers in fields ranging from law, accounting, consulting and real estate. Visitors to the LawMarketing Portal at www.lawmarketing.com will notice that the site carries a news feed from PM Forum, aggregating stories about the AmLaw 200 law firms.
The theme of the meeting is "Effectiveness" and presentations cover "thought leadership," "people management" and "brand building." I'm sure the Brits have figured out some things that we Yanks have not when it comes to marketing, so the seminars should be interesting. But the main reason I'm going is to meet and make friends with marketers in England.
I haven't been to London since 1985, so I'm excited to see what's changed. I'm sure the beer is still warm and the traffic still drives on the left side. If you are going too, please shoot me an email at Lbodine@LawMarketing.com and let's hook up.
