What are the most popular hotels for business travelers?  Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt and Sheraton, according to the September/October issue of Consulting magazine.  The least popular for business travelers are Intercontinental, W Hotels, Four Seasons and Radisson.

The magazine got responses via an online survey from nearly 700 consultants for its annual Best Places to Stay survey.  They found that 21% of respondents spend more than 125 nights a year away on business and 57% spend more than 50 nights away.  70% log between 50,000 and 1 million frequent flyer miles.  So this is a crowd that travels a lot.

The magazine identified those hotels which 20% or more consultants said they visited over the past 12 months, and asked them which was their favorite.  Using the answers, the magazine came up with the following report card on hotels:

Marriott: A+ for its laser focus on business travelers

Four Seasons: A because every stay is memorable

Ritz-Carlton: A for its impeccable services

W Hotels: A- because it’s style and for being a place to be seen

Westin: A- for attention to detail and inspired amenities

Hyatt, Hilton, Intercontinental Embassy Suites all got B’s

Sheraton and Crowne Plaza got C’s

Radisson got a D

The most important amenities were high-speed Internet access, express check-in and –out, a morning wake-up call, a morning newspaper (preferably the Wall Street Journal or New York Times, not USA Today), and a fitness center with longer hours and new equipment.

As one consultant told the magazine: “I don’t need two king- or even queen-size beds.  Give me one decent bed, a large desk with high-speed Internet access, and a comfortable chair.”

The most "wired” hotels included Marriott (800 hotels have in-room high-speed Internet access), W Hotels (all guest and meetings rooms have high-speed Internet and all public spaces have wireless) Ritz-Carlton (all hotels has high-speed Internet), and Four Seasons (37 of 57 hotels have high-speed Internet).

The airlines that most consultants have frequent flyer miles with are American and United.  Most popular car rental companies were Hertz and Avis.
